Alexander John, born 1899, was a son of Murdo and Bella nee Macleod who who resided at 7 Newton Street (back house), and later 13 Coulregrein. He was a Chief Steward in the Merchant Navy and married to Dolina nee Macfarlane. They had one son, Alastair, who was born on 8 November 1936.

Alex. died at sea (off the coast of Sierra Leone ) on 18 March 1944 of coronary thrombosis and was buried at sea. His death is recorded in the War Memorial book held by Stornoway Historical Society.
