59011: John Macmillan

John Macmillan (1902-1989) was a son of Angus Macmillan and Christina Macinnes, 1 Lemreway. 

The family later moved to 11 Lemreway.

John enrolled in the Royal Naval Reserve, S/Ns B7404 and C7603, on August 28, 1924. His record shows that he was 5ft 9in tall, with brown hair, brown eyes and a fresh complexion. John was a fisherman on Banff and Stornoway registered fishing boats including the Annabella, the Stella Matina and the Flora Smith.

He was Mobilised on August 28, 1939 and served in the Royal Navy during the Second World War. Based at HMS Mentor, HMS Proserpine and HMS Victory I. John survived the sinking of HMS Comorin in 1941. 

In Stornoway, in 1930, he married Jane Ann Macmillan, 23 Lemreway. John and Jane Ann settled at 23 Lemreway and they had six children. 

John operated a bus service to Stornoway and owned a number of buses over the years.
