John Macdonald (1826-1906), 1 Keose, went to Govan, Glasgow and worked in a sugar factory. He then went to Edinburgh and he joined the Police there. He returned to Keose in 1856 with his wife Catherine Finlayson and became a fisherman.
John had first met Catherine when she came from Applecross to serve as nurse to the children of the Rev Roderick Reid in Keose. She subsequently went to work in Edinburgh, where John tracked her down and married her.
