John, born 1871, was a son of Hugh and Ann nee Macleod, 31 Valtos. He was sailing on Australian coast and received his master's certificate in 1911.

In WW1 was captain in the Mercantile Marine; invalided home in October 1916 with pulmonary trouble. He died at home on 31 January 1919 aged 47.
