51220: John Newall
John (1870-1940) was the son of Thomas Newall of Tolsta Farm.
After his mother’s death his father married Ann Tattersall.
In 1881 and 1891 John was recorded in the census as living in Tong with his grandparents, Donald Macdonald and Mary (surname unknown), who were both born in Lochs.
In 1902, after the death of his father, John took over the running of the farm.
John married Ann Mackay, of 30b Valtos, and they settled at Tong Farmhouse. The couple had at least five children. Their son Thomas Donald died young in 1916.
In 1923 the family left Tong Farm and emigrated to Canada.
In 1933 the couple returned to Lewis leaving some of their children in Canada. At some point they settled at Reay Cottage, 67 Back.
John was buried in Gress Cemetery on 28th of March 1940.
