Roderick, born in 1872, was a son of Donald and Catherine nee Mackay, 18 Valtos - later 11 Tobson.

According to tradition he emigrated to Canada and worked on the Montreal Stock Exchange. He had his own stock-broking company with brother Malcolm; they lost their money and Roderick went to work on the prairies (possibly Manitoba).
