47357: William Smith

William Smith (1909-1998) was a son of John Smith and Catherine Mackenzie, 16 Cromore.

He enrolled in the Royal Naval Reserve, S/N AX14577, BX9098 and CX7946, on October 10, 1928. His records indicate that he was 5ft 8in tall with dark brown hair, blue eyes and a dark complexion. William was a fisherman on Stornoway registered fishing boats including the Cailleach Bidiche, the Cailleach Oidhche, the Spray and the Ebenezer mostly with his brothers.

In 1937 he joined the Merchant Navy and travelled to the River Plate on the SS Highland Chief, to New Zealand on the SS Rotorua, SS Tamaroa and the SS Tainui and to the Kara Sea in the Arctic on the SS Eskdene.

William was medically dischanged in 1939 with Tuberculosis. He was a bachelor.
