Alexander was one of twin sons born in 1865 to Malcolm MacLeod and Mary MacLean of Laimrig on the island of Berneray. His mother died when he was 9 years old. Alex became a fisherman and married Flora Smith of 16 Balallan. They made their home in Aberdeen.
