John, son of Malcolm Smith and Mary Mackenzie, 60 Balallan was at one time a miller at Eishken until the family were evicted in 1833. They lived for a time in Cleitir before moving to Balallan. He married Flora Mackenzie, 46 Balallan and settled at 16 Balallan. After Flora died in 1871, John married Margaret Macleod, 6 Caverstay.
