Peter, born in 1843, was a son of John and Mary nee Maclennan who emigrated from Barraglom to Quebec in 1855.

According to the 1851 census (Barraglom) he was born c1841, but the inscription on his gravestone reads;

'Peter Buchanan, died May 16, 1863, aged 20 years, 3 months, he was killed by the falling of a tree'
