Charles Innes was a partner in the law firm of Charles Fraser-Macintosh in Inverness. In July 1874 he defended the Bernera Rioters and due to his adroit cross-examining of Donald Munro, the three Bernera crofters; Angus Macdonald, Norman Macaulay and John Macleod were aquitted. He was held in such high esteem in Bernera that over a century later his name was given to a new housing sheme in Kirkibost: Dun Innes.
