John, born 1913, was the son of Donald and Kirsty Mackay, 7 Valtos. A school teacher at Balallan from 1946 to 1959, he was married to Malcolmina nee Evans; with issue. John, who came to Balallan shortly after the Second World War was primarily reponsible for re-instituting the Lochs Agricultural Society, which was a great success for many years. Much of the spade work in obtaining a hall for the village was done by him and he was also a founder member of the Soval Angling Association. He moved from Balallan to Ullapool where he was headmaster until his retirement in 1978. John visited Lewis on numerous occasions since his retirement.
