37431: John Mackay

Iain Dhòmhnaill Dhonnchaidh

John (1886-1956) was a son of Donald Mackay and Mary Maclennan, 11  Kershader.

On September 20, 1916 he enrolled in the Royal Naval Reserve Service Number DA12087. His record indicates that he was 5 ft 7½ in tall with blue eyes, a fresh complexion and a tattoo of a girl's head on his right arm.  John was immediately Mobilised and served in the Royal Navy in the First World War. Based at HMS Iolaire, HMS Pembroke and aboard HMS Thalia, HMS Kingfisher, HMT Macduff, HMS Egmont and HMS Iron Duke. John was awarded £13.15/- in Prize Money and is mentioned in Loyal Lewis: Roll of Honour 1914-1918.

After the War he worked at the Post Office in Stornoway.

John was a  bachelor at Kershader.
