John, born July 1829, was the son of Donald and Kirsty nee Macdonald from Erista and emigrated with his family to Cape Breton. They moved on to Winslow, Eastern Townships, Quebec, and in 1854 he married his first cousin Catherine Macdonald from Gisla, who has also emigrated with her parents in 1853.
