28558: Angus Macaulay

Angus, a son of Murdo and Isobel nee Morrison, was a tenant in Valtos living at the northern end of the village beside the sea. He had a son Kenneth, who became a sea-captain.

According to William Matheson (Families of Lewis – Macaulays) it was in Angus’s time that the village of Valtos shifted from above Traigh na Clibhe (near the two cemeteries) to where the Valtos pier is now, in order to be closer to the boats after a particularly bad storm smashed all the village boats. This would have been about 1800, as Angus’s father died in 1780 and his grandson was born in 1833.
