23052: Donald Maciver

Donald Maciver (1919-1981), son of Roderick Maciver and Christina Macleod, 3 Laxay. Donald was a leading seaman in the Royal Navy during the Second World War. He survived the sinking of HMS Grafton which was torpedoed on 29 May 1940 whilst in the process of rescuing personnel from the stricken destroyer HMS Wakeful from which 650 men were lost. He was aboard HMS Victorious when her planes sank the Bismark and when she was attacked by Japanese Kamikaze pilots.

He worked on Hydro Electric schemes on the mainland but returned to the Island and married Peggy Ann Buchanan from 11 Brenish but had no children. He was a crofter/weaver and settled at 3 Laxay.
