19301: William Black

William Black was born on 9 November 1841 in Glasgow and studied at the School of Art. He became a journalist and moved to London in 1864, acting as war correspondent in the Austro-Prussian and Franco-Prussian Wars. He wrote popular gothic romances, usually set in the Highlands, which were wildly successful in their day.

He died in Brighton on 10 December 1898.
