He emigrated to South Africa and at Dundee, Natal in 1919 he married Elizabeth Gimson. John and Elizabeth settled in Dundee and they had a son, Roderick Gimson Mackenzie.
John was widowed in 1921 and at the time of his death was living at Boundary Road, Dundee, Natal.
