John (1891-1916) was the son of John Macarthur and Ann Mackenzie, 4 Calbost. His father died the year he was born.

The family later moved to 6 Steinish, Stornoway.

John served in the 7th Seaforth Highlanders in the First World War Service Number S/10847. He fought in the trenches of Flanders as a young man in his early 20s. John  went to help a wounded German soldier on the field of battle and the German drew his pistol and shot him.

John is buried in the Faubourg d'Amiens Cemetery, Arras, grave II.A.1. His name is commemorated on the Stornoway War Memorial and he is mentioned in Loyal Lewis: Roll of Honour 1914-1918.
