He was a teacher and emigrated to South Africa. Allan became the Director of Education in Rhodesia.
At Richmond, in 1912, he married Suzanne Maria Du Toit from Richmond South Africa. The couple had at least three children and at the time of his death were living at Mountain View Flats, 34 Beach Road, Fish Hoek, Cape Town.
