It is unclear whether Norman was a son or grandson of James and Margaret nee Macdonald who lived in Kirkibost. In the census of 1851 he is recorded as a son, but in 1861 he is noted as a grandson. Mary nee Macnaughton had a son Norman who was born in 1850-51.
