Norman was born in 1858 to Donald and Marion nee Macaulay in Tobson. They lived in Bosta until 1878 when they moved to 25 Kirkibost. He inherited the family croft and settled there with his wife Annabella Mackenzie, 13 Hacklete. They raised five children.
