James Matheson (1845-1934) was the son of James Matheson and Mary Turnbull, Selkirk. His father died and his mother married John Hymers.  The family lived at Farr, Sutherland and in 1864 moved to  Shepherd's Cottage, Eishken which was called Eishken Lodge in the 1871 Census. 

In Lochs, in 1873 he married Rachel Macleod, Shell Head. James and Rachel settled at Shell Head and by 1891 had moved to Stornoway. The couple had at least two children.

James was widowed in 1920.
