John William  (1908-1950) was a son of John Macaskill and Ann Macdonald, 17 Gravir. The family later moved to 22 Point Street, Stornoway.

On January 8, 1927 he enrolled in the Royal Naval Reserve Service Number AX13778 and re-enrolled under BX8743 and CX7503. His records indicate that he was 6 ft tall with fair hair, blue eyes, a fresh complexion and a scar on the bridge of his nose and one on his right shoulder. John was a fisherman on Stornoway registered fishing boats and was was declared Medically Unfit due to Pleurisy.

At Stornoway, in 1935, he married Christina Macaskill, 13 Swordale. John and Christina settled at 3 Bennadrove Road, Stornway. The couple later moved to 38 Plasterfield.
