Lachlan was the son of Lachlan Maclean and Margaret Macleod; the family lived in Govan, Glasgow.

During the Second World War the family settled in a small cottar’s house at 34 North Tolsta. After the war the family returned to Glasgow.

Lachlan married a woman with Gress (and Tolsta) connections and settled with her in Inverness.
