John, born 1849, was the younger son of that name born to Donald Campbell and Ann Morrison. His father, a fisherman, died of drowning about 1850. In 1851 John, his older brother and their widowed mother were living with his grandmother in Borve. In 1855  the family emigrated to Australia on the Royal Albert.
