Mary, born 1836, was the daughter of Donald and Rachel MacAskill of Ruisgarry. In 1845, with the re-organisation of Ruisgarry’s crofts into smaller plots, the family emigrated to Baddeck Forks, Cape Breton. Mary remained unmarried.
