John was the son of John Martin. Although John’s parents were married the name of his mother is not certain, all that is known is that she was from Bragar. John’s father was originally from 21a North Tolsta, but it is thought that John’s parents were living in Glasgow at the time of his birth.   

It is known that John was in the Navy, as was his father.
