John, born about 1837, was the first son of that name born to John Munro and Flora MacKillop of old Ruisgarry. The family lived in old Ruisgarry until about 1849, when they moved to 14 Benside, Stornoway.
John married Catherine MacRae of 8 Melbost. They lived at Laxdale Lane, Stornoway.
