107581: Malcolm Mackenzie

Malcolm Mackenzie (born 1864) was a son of John Mackenzie and Janet Martin, 20 Crossbost.

He married Ann Macleod, 33 Crossbost.  Malcolm and Ann settled in Stornoway.

His father John was one of the 18 landless cottars who sailed from Crossbost to raid and occupy their former village of Orinsay which was let as a grazings farm to his brother in law, Roderick Martin in the 1880s under a lease for 19 years at a rent of 50 per annum.

On 9 April 1891, twelve of the raiders, including John, were tried under the Trespass (Scotland) Act of 1865. They were found guilty and given the maximum sentence of 14 days imprisonment in Inverness.
