Neil, born in 1898, was the son of Donald MacDonald and Ann MacLeod of Scarista, where Neil attended the local school. In 1907 the family moved to Backhill, Berneray and Neil continued his education at Berneray School until 1913. In the 1911 census his occupation is shown as a wool spinner.
