106490: John Smith

John (1892-c1961) was a son of Angus Smith and Ann Martin, 13 Achmore.

In 1918 he left Lewis to find work. He worked in Patagonia: in Tierra Del Fuego, Argentina and in Chile as a shepherd and eventually became a ‘gaucho’: a pampas cowboy.

In 1923 he returned to Lewis and purchased a property at the corner of Church Street and Keith Street: which was known as either 34 Church Street or 43 Keith Street. He established John Smith & Sons butchers there.

John married Rodina Mackay, of 9 Achmore, and the couple settled at 13 Achmore. They had at least four children.
