Roderick was born in 1916, the son of Allan MacKillop and Marion MacKillop of Càrn House, Rhuvanish. He was a pupil at Berneray School from 1922 to 1925, when the family moved to 6 Lochportain.
Roderick married Effie MacDougall of Boreray, with whom he had a daughter. The family settled at 4 Clachan Sands.
