John Archie MacAskill was born in 1916, the son of yachtsman Kenneth MacAskill and Christina MacLeod of 6 Rhuvanish. John Archie was a pupil at Berneray School between 1922 and 1930, leaving to attend Kingussie Higher Grade School.
He joined the merchant navy.
John Archie was passed a house at Ardmaree, and in 1981 bought Bay View, 15 Rhuvanish, which had belonged to his uncle Johnnie MacAskill.
