105560: Mary Ann MacDonald

Mary Ann was born in 1860, the daughter of Effie MacDonald of Scolpaig and farm servant Ewen MacKillop of Baile.

At North Uist in 1880 she married fisherman John MacAskill of Rubha Mor. Together they were to have ten children before his death by drowning in 1899. As a widow, she moved to Backhill, working as a wool spinner.

All five of Mary Ann’s surviving sons fought during the Second World War, and she would go and pray for their safe return at a quiet spot near her home. All came home.
