108490: Royal Naval Division

The Royal Naval Division was an infantry unit formed at the beginning of the Great War, comprising Royal Navy and Royal Marine volunteers and reservists who were not required for service at sea. It consisted of eight battalions which were named after naval commanders: Drake, Benbow, Hawke, Collingwood, Nelson, Howe, Hood and Anson. These were later numbered from 1st to 8th.

After suffering losses at Antwerp and Gallipoli, it was transferred to the British Army, in 1916, as the 63rd (Royal Naval) Division. As part of the army, it fought on the Western Front for the rest of the war.
