57068: Strathy, Sutherland

Strathy is a scattered coastal community in North Sutherland that was populated by those displaced at the time of the clearances. Prior to the clearances there were only four crofters living here, later growing to 42. Although the village was relatively small, no fewer than four churches were built here – the first, a Telford design, built in 1828, is now a private dwelling.

Strathy boasts the first lighthouse in Scotland to run on electricity, which was also the last built as a manned one.
