Dunedin city lies in the Otago region on the south-eastern coast of South Island. It was founded in 1848 as a settlement of the Free Church of Scotland. After gold was discovered in the Otago interior in 1861 a hugh influx of migrants, mostly Australian, transformed the settlement into a commercial centre.
