54773: Portnaguran, Lewis

Port nan Giùran; Portnagiuran; Portnaguiran; Port na Guiran

Portnaguran in Point, Isle of Lewis is the township at the north-easternmost point of the peninsula. It lies one mile (1.5 km) southwest of Tiumpan Head and just south of the headland called Geòdha 'ic Sheòrais or sometimes Small Head amongst locals.

The Ordnance Survey name book of Ross and Cromarty (insular), volume 55 states that 'The name is derived from a quantity of whales from time to time being brought ashore at this bay where their livers were taken from them, hence the derivation "The Port of the Livers"'; (Gaelic giùrain = livers).
