Cappadale, Lewis

Cappadale, Lewis

Cappadale, situated near Uig Sands, was one of the three villages cleared in the late 1830s to make way for the farm at Ardroil. The inhabitants mostly went to Swainbost, and thereafter emigrated to Canada in 1851. However, two brothers, Farquhar and Kenneth Macdonald, settled in Geshader. The area is now occupied by crofts 1 and 2 Ardroil.

(Cappadale is also the name of a hollow on the island of Taransay ¾ of a mile south from the summit of Ben Raah).
