Dunbartonshire was a historical county located in the west of Scotland, north of the Clyde. Two alternative spellings existed, Dunbartonshire and Dumbartonshire, and these were used side-by-side for a long time. From the early 20th century onwards, however, 'Dunbartonshire' became prevalent, providing a contrast with the spelling adopted for the county's main town, Dumbarton.
