209: Patagonia

Patagonia extends across the southern tip of South America, in both Chile and Argentina. Besides the native and Spanish populations, from about 1865 onward the region was settled by Welsh, Scottish and other immigrants, including a substantial number of Hebrideans – about 200, by one estimate. Sheep farming was the main activity; Lewismen also ran hotels, kept shops and held professional posts.
