17644: Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia
Cape Breton, a large island in the province of Nova Scotia, is well known for its surviving Gaelic culture and language. Although Scots first arrived on the island as early as 1629, the main period of immigration was between 1775 and 1860, when tens of thousands of emigrants from the Highlands and Islands settled here.
