12183: Sandwick, Lewis

Sandwick is a settlement lying to the east of Stornoway. It includes Sandwickhill and Lower Sandwick. Although it is contiguous with the town of Stornoway today, this was not the case in the past.

The respective limits of Stornoway and Sandwick have changed over time. Historically, Sandwick included Sandwick Park, which is today Oliver’s Brae, as well as the Battery Park area. Both these are part of Stornoway today.

The name Sandwick is from the Old Norse Sandvík, ‘sand bay’.
