‘Ireland’ is used here as a geographical term that includes the Republic of Ireland as well as Northern Ireland (Ulster), which is part of the United Kingdom.

In oral history and in the records of historical societies in the Outer Hebrides, people are often recorded as having moved to or from Ireland, without further qualification.
