60005: Whalebone Arch, Bragar
The Whalebone Arch at Lakeview House, 63 Bragar, is the jaw of an 82′ blue whale recovered from the shore in September 1920. In 1921 the bones were erected over the gateway to the house by its owner, Murdo Morrison, the village postmaster. The harpoon that killed the whale was incorporated into the structure.
The arch stands to 20′, with each side measuring 25′ and weighing about 4 tons.
A recent community project refurbished the arch and encased in in fibreglass for preservation.
