44068: Bernera War Memorial

The War Memorial is situated in Breaclete in the centre of Bernera.

Bernera must have been amongst the first places in Lewis to erect a War Memorial after the Great War. It was paid for by money collected locally and donations from exiles and friends, and unveiled in the early twenties. Further names were added after the Second World War.

The spire suffered some damage when it was hit by flying debris during a hurricane.
It is sobering to see how many young men from this small community were lost in such a few years.
