32020: ECC 42.12 Loch nam Bodach
Summary:
FIELD BOUNDARY (Post Medieval – 1540 AD to 1900 AD)
WALL (Post Medieval – 1540 AD to 1900 AD)
DYKE (Post Medieval – 1540 AD to 1900 AD)
Stone and turf wall
Location:
NB 40921 20749
Full description:
"Running from north to south for 720 metres along the western shore of Loch nam Bodach, the remains of the dyke are constructed variously of drystone, stone and turf and solely from turf. This wall seems to mark the eastern extents of the pre-crofting field system (42) covering much of the ground immediately to the east of Cromore township and as such is a natural extension of dyke (42.2). The purpose of this dyke, on the shore of the loch, seems to be to exclude from the field system a small unnamed headland that protrudes from the loch’s western shore out towards its outflow. The wall crosses the base (western end) of this promontory, effectively enclosing it, perhaps for stock management purposes." (Burgess 2004, 129)
