31944: ECC 17.3 Eilean Croix – FIELD SYSTEM (Post Medieval – 1540 AD to 1900 AD)
Summary:
FIELD SYSTEM (Post Medieval – 1540 AD to 1900 AD)
Pre-crofting feannagan or lazybed field system
Location:
NB 39228 21874
Full description:
"Situated immediately behind the west shore of Eilean Croix, at the east end of Eilean Chalium Cille, the remains of these lazybeds run down the shallow shore slope for 20 metres from east to west and cover an area of 100 metres from north to south. They have an average wave length of ca 2.5 metres and stand to a maximum height of 0.5 metres. These lazybeds appear to be typical of those seen in pre-crofting agriculture on Lewis, however, their short length and beneficial location makes it impossible to be sure of their exact date as their form is extremely regular." (Burgess 2004, 96)
