31898: ECC 5.3 Eilean Chalium Cille
Summary:
CAIRN (Crofting – 1850 AD to 1950 AD)
CLEARANCE CAIRN (Crofting – 1850 AD to 1950 AD)
Clearance cairn
Location:
NB 37989 21095
Full description:
"Situated to the south of summit of the high ground at the west end of Eilean Chalium Cille, this cairn measures 5 metres from north to south and 3 metres from west to east. Standing up to 1 metre high, this feature is typical of the large clearance cairns formed at the west end of the island during a phase of machine drainage and clearance in the early 1980s. Other similar cairns in the vicinity (5.1) have signs of earlier structures (sheilings, kerb cairns etc) underneath them. However, this feature seems to be entirely of one phase of construction."
